Is German "ahnen" a descendant? 80.121.114.156 08:33, 8 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

According to Pfeifer, ahnen (Middle High German mir, mich anet 'it comes at me') was derived from the preposition/adverb an (Proto-Germanic *an). I agree that semantically, it is rather unlikely (but maybe not impossible) that anet continues the verb overleaf (but the fact that it is not attested outside Gothic is striking; you'd expect it to be present in Old High German if the Middle High German form is related). Only ahnden is related to it, but only indirectly (via Proto-Germanic *anadô (breath, spirit)). --Florian Blaschke (talk) 13:44, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
