Suggestion: more likely *Gumasinþaz or *Gumisinþaz

[edit]

May I suggest an amendment to *Gumasinþaz? Despite the Latin form with -e-, an unstressed -e- in PGmc is unlikely. As a combinatory form Gothic uses guma-, as in gumakunds, 'male'.

Delving back, the combining form of *gumô would have been the oblique stem, which varies *guman- ~ *gumin-, as with *gumanų, *guminiz. These combining forms appear to have simplified (on the Gothic evidence) to *guma- and possibly *gumi-. This *gumi- would then explain the Latin Gume-.
