синий
[edit]So according to this article, Finnish sini and Russian синий are not derived from each other (either way around) as was long believed but they are cognates, i.e. derived from the same source?! --Espoo (talk) 20:04, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
- Correct. This follows from the Mordvinic cognates, which cannot be derived from Russian. This was apparently first proposed by J. J. Mikkola in 1894 and has been since then universally followed in etymological reference works.
- For an old Slavic loanword already from *sinjь we would expect **siini. This is also attested already since the Middle Ages, so recent loaning is clearly out of the question. --Tropylium (talk) 13:05, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
