@Anglom All descendants here have -i-, which suggests that this reflects an original long i. One such source is Latin vīverra. Could it be borrowed from there? —CodeCat 23:45, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

The only oddity is that Cornish also has gwywer, but I don't know if that's significant. The form with -i- gets a lot more Google hits, but there may be Welsh ones in there too. —CodeCat 00:05, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
