- @Wyang Hi, the character 觀 (OC *koːn) is mentioned, along with 昆 (OC *kuːn), in Ye Xiaofeng (2014) as a possible Austroasitic loan in ancient Chu dialect. According to him, this and several other dialectal words offer a further confirmation for the existence of an Austroasiatic substrate in South China. In the article I've mentioned he quotes a sentence from the 《國語》 where the meaning of the character 觀 appears to be “child, son, offspring”, and he thinks it could be loaned from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kuun ~ *kuən (“child”).
