"Sed optume eccum ipse aduenit". Can this be moved to the mainspace? Kwékwlos (talk) 18:34, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not really clear that the quote shows 'eccum ipse' as a unit, rather than simply the two words in sequence. Will have to do a bit of research. Nicodene (talk) 17:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
A translation given here (https://archive.org/stream/plautuswithengli03plauuoft/plautuswithengli03plauuoft_djvu.txt) states: But here's
luck! I literally glossed it as "but, O best-that arrive" or literally, "But that comes the best [thing]!", so it is indeed treated as a unit. Kwékwlos (talk) 17:25, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
That is not at all what it says. Understanding a Latin text requires actually knowing the language to some extent.
The translation at that link is good. It works like this:
> "But [sed] here's luck [optume]! Look! [eccum] There comes [aduenit] that [ille] stranger [hospes] himself [ipse]
that [qui] brought [attulit] the letter [has litteras]!
That is more or less how I'd read it, very much with eccum being an entity of its own. Nicodene (talk) 17:42, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
