[edit]Compare with Nupe yí, Ayere jí, Urhobo oji, perhaps related to Khana yìb, Proto-Lower Cross River *ɟìp, Ahwai ze, Dagbani zu, Westerman and Blench propose an ancestor to be Proto-Volta-Congo *-yi, also potentially related Proto-Bantu *-jíba. In many Volta-Niger languages, and descended Yoruboid languages, the form jí sometimes is only maintained in the verb form "to steal," while other languages may only use "ji" in the context of the noun form "oji" (thief), but will use another term for "to steal," and vice versa.
