• A possible hypothesis may be that it ultimately derives from a contraction of *é-ɓó (“goat”) +‎ *-kɔ (“male, masculine”), literally “male goat”, however, it may have been older forms or simply roots of these terms. In many cognate terms for the Proto-Yoruboid word *é-ɓó (“goat”) in other languages, the vowel /ʊ/ is present, so it may be from *ɛ́-ɓʊ́ (“goat”) +‎ *-kɔ (“male”)
