[edit]Most likely from an unattested adjective *welk (“moist, withering”) + *-ēn, which goes back to Proto-Indo-European *welg- (“moist; wet”), compare Lithuanian vilgyti (“to make wet”). Could go back to a hypothetical Proto-Germanic *welkāną, but is only attested in West Germanic.
