Proto-West Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly derived from *staigijan (to raise) + -r- frequentative suffix. However the weak class 1 inflection is unexpected as frequentives are normally class 2 verbs. Otherwise possibly from *staigr (steep) +‎ *-jan.
