[edit]From Proto-Germanic *spruttōną, from earlier paradigm *spruttōþi ~ *sprutunanþi, from pre-Proto-Germanic *sprud-nā́-ti ~ *sprud-un-ánti, iterative to *spreutan (“to sprout”).
