[edit]Uncertain[1]; perhaps from unattested *sūm, from Proto-Germanic *sūmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *suH-mó-s, from *sewH- (“to let go”)[2] + *-mós, + *-jan. Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐάω (eáō, “to let (go), allow, leave alone”).
