From Proto-Indo-European *Hrey- (to scream, roar, howl, bark). Cognate with Lithuanian ríeti (to scream; to bark at, scold, j-type), Latvian riet (to bark), Russian ра́ять (rájatʹ, to sound) and possibly Sanskrit रै (rai, noise, barking sound).
