[edit]Unknown; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kerh₃- (“to burn”), perhaps cognate with Lithuanian kar̃šti (“to become hot”), Latvian kar̂st (“to become hot; to hurt”),[1] and related to *herþ (“hearth”), hyrr (“fire”), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌹 (hauri, “coal”).
