[edit]From Proto-Germanic *gruttōną, from earlier paradigm *gruttōþi ~ *grutunanþi, from pre-Proto-Germanic *gʰrud-nā́-ti ~ *gʰrud-un-ánti, iterative to *greutan (“to crush”).
