[edit]Uncertain; possibly from unattested Proto-Germanic *fūraz,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *pyuh₂-ró-s, from *pih₂-w-, from *pyeh₂- (“to beat”), cognate with Latin paviō (“to beat, strike”), Lithuanian pjáuti (“to cut, slaughter”), Ancient Greek παίω (paíō, “to strike, hit”).[2]
