[edit]Presumably from Proto-Germanic *blaitaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd-o-s, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleyd-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *blědъ (“pale”), Albanian blehurë (“pale”).
