Proto-West Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Germanic *þunkōną, zero-grade iterative of unattested *þinkaną (to make wet), from Proto-Indo-European *téng-e-ti (whence Latin tingō (to wet, moisten), Ancient Greek τέγγω (téngō, to wet, moisten)), from *teng- (to make wet) +‎ *-eti,[1] or perhaps from unattested *þunk- (wetness, moiture) +‎ *-ōn.
