Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Possibly derived from pre-Proto-Vietic *k-jɔːʔ [kʰ(V)jɔːʔ] "wind" through metathesis: *kʰ(V)jɔːʔ > *k-hɔːjʔ. See khái (tiger) < PV *k-haːlʔ < pre-Proto-Vietic *k-laːʔ [kʰlaːʔ] for the same exact pattern. I'm not sure how secure can "smoke" and "wind" be semantically connected though.”

Noun

[edit]

*k-hɔːjʔ

  1. smoke
