Proto-Uralic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps akin to Proto-Indo-European *mesg- (to dip, sink). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Reconstruction

[edit]

The Mari, Permic and Hungarian descendants suggest rather *muśke-, which may potentially be due to the labializing influence of *m-. In the case of Mari, Aikio (2013) proposes that such a development near labial consonants is indeed regular: compare also e.g. *kolmes, *kopa.

Verb

[edit]

*mośke-

  1. to wash
