[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nuh₂-eh₂, verbal stem of *neh₂w- (“to die, lack”). Cognate with Tocharian A nwām (“sick”), Welsh newyn (“hunger”), Old Irish núna (“famine”), etc.
