Etymology

From a root *ār-(e) of uncertain origin, plus the suffix *-äñce found also in e.g. *ākäñce (“remote”).

Adams supports a connection of the first element with Hittite 𒄩𒄩𒊑 (ḫaḫri-, “lungs ~ midriff”), reconstructing Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂(e)ri, adducing also Proto-Celtic *ārū (“kidney”) (Old Irish áru, Welsh aren) and Latin rēn (“kidney”).

Another hypothesis derives this root from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- (“to fit together > to be fond of, love”), comparing especially Ancient Greek ἀρέσκω (aréskō, “to please; to make amends”), Hesychian ἀρτύς (artús, “bond, friendship, love”) and Proto-Tocharian *ārtw- (“to love, praise, rejoice in”).
