[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wertenán, from Proto-Indo-European *wertenóm, equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn, to rotate”) + *-eno. Cognate with Sanskrit वर्तन (vártana, “rotation, rolling, spindle”).
