- From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wōˀb-, from Proto-Indo-European *wōb-.
- From Proto-Indo-European *weh₂b- or *weh₃b-.
Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *wōpijaną (“to cry out, to lament”).
