[edit]Formally from Proto-Indo-European *tréh₂yeti + *-jati, ye-present from Proto-Indo-European *treh₂- (“to pass through”). Cognate with Sanskrit त्रायते (trāyáte, “to protect”), possibly Latin intrāre (“to enter”).
