[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stōˀmas, from Proto-Indo-European *stoh₂-mo-s, from *steh₂- (“to stand”).
Cognate with Lithuanian stúomas (“stature, figure, trunk, piece of linen for a shirt”), Ancient Greek στώμιξ (stṓmix, “piece of wood”).
