[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *st(е)ibas, from Proto-Indo-European *steib(ʰ)- or *stib(ʰ)- (“stem, cane”), from *stebʰ- (“to harden, stiffen; pole, stalk”). Cognate with Lithuanian stíebas, Ancient Greek σταφυλή (staphulḗ).
