[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sleiˀm-, from Proto-Indo-European *sleh₁y-m-, from the root *sleh₁y-, *sley- (“smooth, slick, sticky, slimy”). Cognate with Ancient Greek λεῖμαξ (leîmax, “slug”), Latin līmāx (“slug”).
