Etymology

[edit]

From earlier *skrebtì, of Proto-Balto-Slavic origin. Cognate with Latvian skrabt (to scrape, to comb), Lithuanian skrebė́ti (to rasp (of noise)).

Further origin apparently from Proto-Indo-European *skrebʰ-, probably related via schwebeablaut to *(s)kerbʰ- whence Proto-Slavic *ščьrbati (to chip, to splinter). Compare also Proto-Germanic *skrepaną (to scrape), *skrubbōną (to scrub).

Verb

[edit]

*skretì impf[1]

  1. to scrape, to scrub
