Etymology

Possibly derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weg- (“to grow”).

Early scholars (Miklošič, Uhlenbeck, Kiparsky, and still supported by Germanists) presumed borrowing from Old High German obaz, obez or Proto-West Germanic *obaet (“fruit”), which has been dismissed since then (by most Slavists) for phonetic and chronological reasons (though these reasons would not necessarily hold for a pre-OHG borrowing).
