[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *arź-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁órǵʰis (“testicle”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis, “testicle”), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬍 (ərəzī), Old Armenian որձիք pl (orjikʻ, “testicles”). Baltic cognates include derivatives Lithuanian er̃žilas, ar̃žilas (“stallion”), aržùs (“hot-tempered, lustful”), Latvian ērzelis (“stallion”).
