Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *m(a)ūˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *muH- (<*miuH-) and cognate with Lithuanian maudyti, Latgalian maut, Latin moveo, and Sanskrit मीवति (mī́vati, move, push) according to Derksen (2008: 338) (see Proto-Indo-European *m(y)ewh₁- (to move)). According to Pokorny 741-743, from a Proto-Indo-European *mew- (wet, damp, to wash).
