[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ljoʔu, *leʔw, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₁w-. Cognate with Latvian laũt (“to allow, stop, yield, rely on”), Lithuanian liáuti (“to stop”), Old Prussian aulaũt (“to die”).
