From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kanas, from Proto-Indo-European *kon-o-, from *ken-. Equivalent to *čęti (“to begin”) +‎ *-ъ.

For the meaning compare dial. Serbo-Croatian крај (“end”), dial. Russian край (kraj, “edge, end”) (< *krajь (“edge, end”)).
