[edit]Suggested to be from Proto-Indo-European *kolHkolH-o-, from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₁- (“to call, shout”). Cognate with Latvian kaļuôt (“talk idly”), Greek καλέω (kaléo, “call”), Latin calāre (“call”). In any case, ultimately onomatopoeic.
