Etymology

Uncertain. Probably a derivative in *-yrь (agentive suffix) with unclear root.

Trubachev (ESSJa) compares it with Upper Sorbian kuntwora (mosquito), Lower Sorbian kuntwor (mosquito), possibly reflecting pre-Sorbian *kǫ- +‎ *tvorъ (creature).
