Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/goněti
Appearance
Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *ganētei. Cognate with Lithuanian ganėti (“to suffice”). Perhaps derived from an earlier adverb Proto-Balto-Slavic *ganāˀ (“enough”) + *-ěti, whence Lithuanian ganà (“enough, rather”). Further origin uncertain (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (“to strike”)).
