[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *berˀdjāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerh₁dyeh₂ (or *bʰerh₁deh₂ + *-j-), from *bʰer- (“to bear (give birth to)”) + *-d-.
Compare Lithuanian ber̃ždžias (“barren (of a cow)”), ber̃gždžias (“barren (of a cow)”), Latin fordus (“pregnant”) (< *foridos), forda.
