Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably from *bľuti (to vomit) +‎ *-kati, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlewH- (to overflow, to gush). The Serbo-Croation and Ukrainian forms may reflect an ancient telic s-extension or may be of expressive origin. Akin to Ancient Greek φλύω (phlúō, to boil over), Latin fluō (flow).

Trubachev proposes instead origin from an earlier **bjukati, which is incompatible with the iterative form *blyjati > dial. Bulgarian блия (blija), Serbo-Croatian бли́јати.

Verb

[edit]

*bľukati impf (perfective *blyknǫti)

  1. to gush, to spout
    Synonyms: *jьzvьrěti, *xlynǫti
  2. (derogatory) to defecate (for animals)
