[edit]Possibly from a Proto-Indo-European root *abʰ-. Compare Sanskrit अह्नाय (ahnāya, “instantly, at once”), Ancient Greek ἄφαρ (áphar, “at once”), ἄφνω (áphnō, “suddenly”).
Compare also Old Novgorodian абьно (abĭno, “if, when”).
