[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kimelаs, from Proto-Indo-European km̥H-el-i-, probably onomatopoeic from a root *kemH- (“to hum”) + *-eľь.
Cognate with Lithuanian kamanė (“bumblebee”), Latvian kamene (“bumblebee”), Old Prussian camus (“bumblebee”), Proto-Germanic *humelaz (“bumblebee”).
