Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps related to Proto-Ugric *üräŋɜ (“big; old”)^[1], whence Northern Khanty ар (ar, “much, many”), Northern Mansi арыг (aryg, “extra, excess”), and Hungarian öreg (“old, elderly; (dial.) big”). Alternatively, a derivative of *er- (“before”).
