Proto-Samic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]According to Heikkilä (2014: 235–236), the word may descend from Proto-Uralic *wete (“water”). The phonological form is irregular (*vëtë would be expected), but *c is possibly due the influence of Proto-Samic *čācē (“water”). Other sporadic examples of the development *t > *c in Proto-Samic may exist as well, compare *coŋkëtēk.
