Proto-Ryukyuan

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Japonic *turunp- (to copulate).

Verb

[edit]

*turub-

  1. to copulate (of animals)

Usage notes

[edit]

Some Ryukyuan dialects replaced this word; in Oki-no-Erabu and Yoron, it is replaced with a form derived from *uwar(-as)-, as in Okinoerabu っわーやしゅん ('wāya shun) and Yoron っわーゆん ('wāyun)/っわーらしゅん ('wārashun); most Yaeyama dialects have a derived form *kanae- (e.g. Ishigaki かないるん (kanairun)/かないん (kanain))) which may be related to Japanese 叶える (kanaeru, to fulfill (a wish)), but Taketomi, Hatoma, and Hateruma have forms that are likely cognate to Japanese 睦ぶ (mutsubu, to be intimate) (Taketomi んつぶん (ntsubun) and Hatoma ずぶん (dzubun), Hateruma ずーぶん (dzūbun)).
