Etymology

Likely from Proto-Oceanic *masawaŋ affixed from *sawaŋ (channel, passage) thus ultimately from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sawaŋ (atmosphere, distance). Compare with Malay sawang (expanse), Iban sawang (gap), Tagalog sáwang (depth).[1][2][3]
