[edit]The spelling of the Latin borrowing Chochilaicus, which represents both the h and g in this name with the digraph ch, indicates that both of the two sounds were fricatives, probably an unvoiced velar fricative /x/ and a voiced velar fricative /ɣ/, respectively.

[edit]Compound of *ᚺᚢᚷᛁᛉ (*hugiʀ, “thought; mind, spirit, heart”) + *ᛚᚨᛁᚲᚨᛉ (*laikaʀ, “play, sport”). Cognate with Old English Hygelāc.
