From Early Proto-Mordvinic *jal (foot) + *-kə ~ *-gə (prolative or comitative suffix). The first stem is from Proto-Uralic *jalka (foot) and cognate with Proto-Finnic *jalka, Proto-Samic *juolkē and Proto-Mari *jål.
