[edit]Sometimes connected with Ulch, Nanai тарга (targa, “beaver”), which themselves may be compared with Nivkh тʼаӻр (tʼaġr, “chipmunk”).
Perhaps separable into *tarba- + *-gan, with the second element recurring in other animal names.
