[edit]Nikolayev / Starostin derive from Proto-Northeast Caucasian *rʕēnq̇wɨ (“lock”).
Has been compared to Proto-Georgian-Zan *rḳina- (“iron”), Old Armenian երկաթ (erkatʻ, “iron”), երկինք (erkinkʻ, “sky”).
