According to Vovin, from Pre-Proto-Japonic *wasar, which was borrowed into late Old Korean as 菩薩 (reconstructed phonetically by Vovin as /pasʌr/), later attested as Middle Korean ᄡᆞᆯ (psol), modern Korean 쌀 (ssal, “rice”).
